Star Wars Dark Side Weekend: 5k Recap

Mark your calendars folks as the strangely unthinkable has happened: I willingly sign up for and participated in a Disney 5k that wasn’t a part of a challenge!

It is no secret that I am not the biggest fan of runDisney 5ks mostly because of how easy it is for people to lie about their times and end up seeded in corrals they have no business being in. Nothing malicious on my end, props to everyone out there rocking their 5k, nothing but respect. However, if you are a slower runner and knowingly seed yourself in a faster corral, whatever your reasoning, you are putting yourself and others in harm’s way.

Refer to any rant I’ve ever done on seeding for reference.

Moving on.

Now, I am very proud to say that that I was placed in the A corral for this morning’s 5k. I’m proud of this because right now I’m sitting underneath my first bib from Wine & Dine in 2014 where I was placed in the very last corral possible. I’ve moved up since then but every time I see that little “A” on my bib it’s a point of pride. It doesn’t happen often but it feels great when it does.

Either that or I’m an adulterer and no one told me.

This morning was all about fun and I actually seeded myself back to the “E” corral to join Andy, Carmela and our friend Becky for some shenanigans.

And there were shananigans.

Becky, myself and an unnamed storm trooper…

We had a fantastic time just catching up and laughing. We were keeping pace with Andy and Carm’s daughter which was pretty much a few minutes of running followed by a few of walking. Some people have the Galloway method, we have the Gabby one.

The lines for the character stops were a bit long so we avoided them all together. I do have to say that the lack of dark side characters was odd. There was the Emperor’s chair as we entered Epcot behind Test Track and some Storm Troopers at Spaceship Earth but that was it. Other characters out there were Ewoks, Chewbacca and R2-D2.

Unlike the World 5k in January I wasn’t really running this time around and I was with friends so this race was more enjoyable. I wasn’t really paying attention to the other runners and I was in a further back corral I had no reason to be annoyed with the walkers.

We had a lot of good laughs along the way and I’m excited to see the photos come through from Photopass (a few have popped into the app already but it usually takes a day or two for all of them to show up).

Dear Disneyland Races, this is what the snackbox should look like. Note the Oreos, Chips and delicious (probably horrible for you) cheese.

All said and done this morning was a rousing success and I am certainly looking forward to what the rest of the weekend has to offer.

Tomorrow I will be shooting off from corral A for the 10k!
