An Open Letter to Donald Trump

One comment

In just 7 weeks Donald Trump is going to be the leader of the country. He is supposed to be the one we look to for guidance and comfort when things are at their worst.

Instead he is constantly trying to pick a fight with a TV show. Oh yes. A TV show.

The leader of the free world. Is mad. At a TV show. For making fun of him.

Can I mention that he is the oldest person to be elected to the presidency? I feel like that’s worth noting.

Oldest president.

Picking a fight.

With a TV show.

This past weekend’s episode once again hurt his feelings when the cold open poked-fun at his RIDICULOUS twitter habit.

My favorite quote from the skit being from Kate McKinnon’s Kellyanne Conway, “There is a reason that Donald tweets so much, he does it to distract the media from his business conflicts and all the very scary people in his cabinet.”

Which raise a fine point. His rant on the cast of Hamilton managed to distract us all from the fact that he settled the Trump University Fraud case for $25 Million rather than facing the court.

If Bush was the President of Weapons of Mass Destruction then it seems Donald will be the President of Mass Distraction.

Anyway. I’m really not here to get political. This isn’t a political blog. I’m not a political person. I’m just PAINFULLY unnerved by the fact that a grown-man who will be our president in seven short weeks is CONSTANTLY PICKING A FIGHT WITH A TV SHOW.

So here is my letter to Mr. Trump:

Dear Donald,

Please grow up. Whether you like it or not, you are going to be the leader of our country. Frankly, I feel like you only ran for attention and your actual win came as much of a shock to you as it did the rest of us. But, this is the world we live in now so you’re going to really need to suck it up. Like, right now.

There are very real issues facing our country that are now resting on your shoulders. Gun violence. Poverty. Hunger. Just to name a few. This is where your country needs your attention.

I’m sorry Alec Baldwin and the cast of SNL are making fun of you. Guess what. That’s what they do. It’s a comedy show. They do parody. They’ve been doing this for 42 years. Yep. That long! And in all that time they’ve made fun of Presidents, Congressmen, Senators, all sorts of political people. It’s what they do.

I’ll try my best not to mention that you’ve hosted the show… twice.

Regardless. You are an adult. With a job to do. That job is running our country not your mouth.

That being said, I’d like you to take the next seven weeks to really think about what you are supposed to mean to this country. What you are supposed to represent. More importantly, who you are supposed to represent.

And, if it’s going to upset you this much. It’s time to turn off the TV and focus on what really matters. If you can’t do that then maybe now would be a great time to hand the reins off to someone who can.

This isn’t a game. This isn’t a reality show. This is real life. A real life where you are going to be leading 330 million people, myself included.

When a gunman enters a club and kills 49 people, you are the voice who is supposed to comfort me. When a hurricane destroys my home, you are the hand that is supposed to reach out to me. When terror, pain and anger flood me you are supposed to be the one to guide me.

You may not be the president I wanted but you’re the one I’ve got for the next four years. Show me that you deserve this and will do good by me and my countrymen.

Are you going to throw away your shot?

Signed,

Josh
